
What is Mersey International Youth Exchange?
Mersey International Youth Exchange 2012 is jointly organised and hosted by Pine Court Housing Association, Wirral Council and Liverpool City Council; and sponsored by Cosmopolitan Student Homes , a member of the Cosmopolitan Housing Group. It is delivered in partnership with Hong Kong Government Commission on Youth.
The theme for this year’s programme is "Young People and Communities". It is a year-long educational and cultural programme running from January 2012 to December 2012, which is aimed at young people aged 17 - 25 living in Wirral and Liverpool area. Applications are invited from young people of all abilities and backgrounds.
The purpose of this programme is:

- to promote Wirral and Liverpool;
- to introduce Chinese culture to young people in Wirral and Liverpool;
- to build upon and strengthen links and partnerships between Wirral/ Liverpool and China; and
- to provide opportunities for young people in Liverpool & Wirral;
- to broaden their horizon and international perspective;
- for self development; and
- to build friendships, and to share ideas and experiences with their Hong Kong counterparts.
To take part, applicants will be shortlisted after returning an application form, then interviewed. If successful, you will be part of a group of 16 that plays host to a delegation of Chinese young people in July, and pay a return visit to Hong Kong in September.

Essential Criteria
To apply, you must:
- be 17 - 25 years old on 1st September 2012;
- live in Wirral or Liverpool;
- have a good knowledge of British culture;
- be knowledgeable about Wirral and Liverpool;
- be prepared to be an ambassador for Wirral and Liverpool;
- be an EU citizen; and
- have a valid travel document.
What am I expected to do should I be successful?
Successful applicants are expected to:
- pay £250, which could be paid in instalments. Help will be available in cases of extreme hardships;
- attend weekly meetings from January to December, which will include evenings and/or weekends;
- fundraise as part of a group;
- act as a welcoming host to the Hong Kong delegates during their 2 weeks stay in July (you are not required to provide accommodation);
- be available to travel to Hong Kong for 2 weeks in early September;
- be able to show a high commitment to the whole programme by attending a minimum of 80% of all meetings and activities; and
- be able and prepared to take part in the whole programme without alcohol or misuse of substances when you are participating. All activities will be alcohol-free, even if you are over 18.
