Celebrating International Day of Sign Languages

September 23, 2025

Today, September 23rd, marks International Day of Sign Languages, a day to celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of the deaf community. This day highlights the importance of sign languages in protecting the human rights of deaf individuals and promotes their full inclusion in society.

Language and inclusion

Just as there are many different spoken languages, there are over 300 unique sign languages used around the globe, each with its own grammar and structure. This day serves as a powerful reminder that communication comes in many forms, and at Pine Court Housing Association, we are committed to making our services accessible for everyone.

Our commitment to accessibility

We believe in a community where everyone can easily access the information and services they need. To support this, we’ve added the Recite Me accessibility tool to our website.

For our deaf residents, this tool offers a range of features to improve the online experience by focusing on visual and reading support.

Here’s how Recite Me helps:

  • Customisable layout: You can simplify the layout, adjust font size, change colours, and use a reading ruler or screen mask to help you focus on the text without distraction.
  • Reading aids: The tool includes a built-in dictionary to quickly look up the meaning of any word on the page, helping to build vocabulary and ensure understanding.
  • Translation: For those whom English is not your first language, the tool can translate website content into over 100 different languages.

Our goal is to ensure our website content is not only accessible but also easy to read and customise for a variety of needs. This is just one part of our ongoing commitment to making our services easy for all of our customers and partners to use.
