Ms Tu Tran Dang is celebrating her 100th birthday this week, at Pine Court Housing Association’s Chung Hok House.
To mark the celebration, we met with Ms Dang and her daughter in law, Ms Voong, to learn all about her life in China, Vietnam, and England.
Born on the 3rd of April 1922 in China, Ms Dang moved to Vietnam where she was a businesswoman and owned a small grocery store.
Following conflict between China and Vietnam in the 60s, she was forced to move back to China and resided in Hong Kong before moving to the UK in 1982. Having lived in Derby, Bradford and London, she settled in Liverpool over 28 years ago to live close to her family who owned a number of takeaways in the area.
Due to her deteriorating health in recent years, Ms Dang’s family chose to relocate her into Pine Court Housing Association’s sheltered accommodation scheme, Chung Hok House.
Ms Dang has lived in Pine Court Housing Association’s scheme since 2008. Her daughter in law and main carer, Ms Ngoc Chan Voong, said:
“My mother-in-law really enjoys living at Chung Hok House, there is a lovely sense of community with all of the tenants here.”
“She [Ms Dang] is currently suffering from dementia, which is really hard to see. I really appreciate Pine Court staff’s help and we know and trust she is in good hands.”
Chung Hok House is a scheme within Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral Precinct and is home to 38 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Tenants who live in the scheme have access to support from bilingual staff and benefit from communal lounges, a kitchen for special events, and a hairdressing salon.
