Gas safety week: protect your home, friends, and family

September 8, 2025

Pine Court Housing Association is supporting UK Gas Safety Week 2025

The safety and wellbeing of our customers are our highest priority. That’s why we are proud to be supporting UK Gas Safety Week, which runs from 8th to 14th September 2025.

This Gas Safety Week, we want to remind you of the simple steps they can take to stay gas safe.

Our commitment to your gas safety

  • Annual gas safety checks: We will contact you to arrange an annual gas safety check for all gas appliances we have installed in your home. This is a free service, and it’s a legal requirement of your tenancy agreement that you allow us to carry it out. This check ensures that all gas pipework, appliances, and flues are in good, safe working order.
  • Prompt repairs: If our Gas Safe registered engineers find any issues with the gas appliances we provide, they will be rectified promptly and safely.
  • Carbon monoxide alarms: We fit a carbon monoxide detector in any room used as living accommodation, which contains a fixed combustion appliance (excluding gas cookers), which is tested during your annual gas safety check.

Your role in staying gas safe

While we take our responsibilities seriously, gas safety is a shared responsibility. Here’s what you can do to help keep yourself and your family safe:

  • Allow access for your annual gas safety check: When we contact you to arrange your annual gas safety check, please make every effort to be available for the appointment. If the date or time is not convenient, contact us as soon as possible to reschedule. It is essential that this check is carried out on time.
  • Use only trusted registered engineer: If you employ anyone to carry out gas work in your home, you must ensure they are a Gas Safety Registered engineer.
  • Look for the warning aigns:
    • The flame on your cooker should be crisp and blue (lazy yellow or orange flames mean you need to get your cooker checked).
    • Dark staining on or around gas appliances.
    • Pilot lights that frequently blow out.
    • Increased condensation inside windows.
    • Anyone suffering from headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness or who collapses or loses consciousness where gas is present, should seek medical advice immediately.
  • Never block vents or flues: Vents and flues are there to ensure your gas appliances work safely. Blocking them can be extremely dangerous.

What to do in an emergency:

If you smell gas, or think you have a gas leak, you must act quickly.

  • Open all doors and windows to let the gas escape.
  • Turn off the gas supply at the meter, if it is safe to do so.
  • Do not smoke or use any naked flames. Do not turn any electrical switches on or off.
  • Go outside immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
  • Once you have contacted the emergency service, please also call us on 0151 709 6878
